Outstanding condition very good quality (and unusual) construction walnut and brass centrepin reel. Carried in early Allcocks catalogues as a trolling reel it has a brass discback design, intended to overcome the problem of binding to the backplate caused by the slight expansion of the wooden spool when exposed to moisture. This was a common issue with Nottingham style reels after several hours in a boat or a seawater environment. The very attractive bulbous handles are typical of Allcocks manufacture and the (only very slightly) age crazed ebonite would indicate a date either side of 1900 - they are well mounted, turn freely and sit on eye shaped seats of brass. The 4\" shallow arbour walnut spool has a drum a shade under 1\" wide and spins really well - smooth with no wobble. There are no splits, cracks or damage and the walnut retains most of its original finish. The foot is full length, 3 1/4\" long, straight and securely mounted, while the optional ratchet has an even, smooth, positive sound, operated by the disc mounted brass button. Calliper check spring. All of the brass is bright but with an even age acquired patina - the reel obviously shows signs of age and use but has evidently been used and stored with care. This would certainly make a very nice display piece but would also be a real head turner on the bank when big pike fishing or stalking out the carp or tench from the margins.
